You Don’t Need Balance… You Need Alignment
When You're Planning for the Superhuman Version of Yourself
Hey Reader!
Last week, we talked about personal mission statements and intentional planning. But this week? We’re diving deeper into how to realistically LIVE it.
Because what’s the point of identifying our core values and creating a mission statement for our lives if we don’t create rhythms that help us actually walk them out, right?
And where does that start? The important roles—the “hats” we wear in our day-to-day lives.
Yes, our identity is in Christ, but on this side of heaven, God has entrusted us with roles where we’re called to shine in and through Him by His grace. The problem? When we’re not paying attention, those roles can quietly drift out of balance.
And from personal experience… I know the feeling:
It’s that constant, underlying pressure that something isn’t quite right. One minute I'm obsessively cleaning the kitchen, and the next moment, I'm awake at 2AM mentally trying to solve problems that absolutely cannot be resolved in the wee hours of the night. 😩
What became really clear to me while working on my mission statement was this: if you don’t understand your roles, your limits, and your need for renewal (Sharpening YOUR Saw), you’ll still end up overwhelmed trying to do all the things.
Because one thing I’m learning, Reader,? Every role in my life cannot receive “maximum Dorene” at the exact same time.
For me, those roles look something like this:
- Jesus Ambassador
- Wife to Pat
- Mama
- Client Consultant & Advocate
- Blogger
- Friend/Collaborator
- Creative Artist
And while all of those roles matter deeply to me, I’ve had to accept something that honestly humbled me a little: not every role requires maximum effort in every season.
I was out here trying to thrive professionally, be fully emotionally available, launch creative ideas, deep clean the house, work out consistently, answer texts immediately, drink enough water, AND somehow remain well-rested and deeply at peace.
Meanwhile, God was like, “Daughter… please sit down somewhere, and stop trying to do My job.”
One of my favorite scriptures that realigns my soul and beautifully reminds me that I don't have to do it all is when Jesus stated:
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. ~Matthew 11:28-29
Because intentional living isn’t about giving every role equal attention at all times, it’s about prayerfully discerning which roles need your focus most in this season—and trusting the Holy Spirit to guide you and lead you back to Jesus who will quiet our souls and give us our well-deserved rest in Him.
The thing is, trying to do everything "well" in our own strength simultaneously is usually the fastest path to burnout. It's a #NOBUENO since He never designed us that way! He designed us to lean and rely ONLY on HIM.
So where do we start?
Honestly? Simpler than you think.
The goal isn’t to create a perfectly polished life strategy overnight; we’re simply identifying the roles God has currently entrusted to us in this season.
That’s it.
Start by grabbing a notebook, planner, sticky note, Notes app—whatever works for you—and begin listing the “hats” you currently wear.
Maybe your list looks like:
- Child of God
- Wife
- Mom
- Caregiver
- Employee
- Business Owner
- Student
- Friend
- Ministry Leader
- Creative
- Volunteer
While there’s no “right” list, try to keep it to no more than 7 important roles (I mean, that’s what Stephen Covey suggests, anyway💪)
Then once you identify your roles, ask yourself these three questions:
👉 Which role currently requires the most attention in this season?
👉 Which role have I unintentionally neglected?
👉 Which role leaves me feeling the most depleted right now?
Because sometimes the areas where we feel the most exhausted are also the areas where we’ve stopped creating healthy rhythms, boundaries, or space for renewal.
And this is important:
The goal is NOT perfection or equal attention across every role.
The goal is awareness.
Because once you become aware of where you are, you can finally invite God into where you’re trying to go.
✨ Suggested Weekly Challenge
This week, I want to challenge you to identify your most significant roles you currently hold in this season of life.
Then ask yourself:
👉 Which role has needed more of my attention lately?
👉 Which role have I unintentionally neglected?
👉 And where might God be inviting me to create healthier rhythms?
Don’t overcomplicate it. Just start paying attention 🤍
✨ “To Be Continued…”
Next week, we’re going to take this one step further and talk about how to create realistic goals within your roles without overwhelming yourself in the process.
Because, we are no longer creating weekly plans for fictional superwomen over here. 😉😎
To be continued… 💛
🙏 Let’s Pray
Heavenly Father, Thank You for being a God who strengthens the weary and restores the broken. For the woman reading this who feels tired, defeated, or discouraged, breathe fresh strength into her spirit right now. Remind her that You are with her in this fight — and that she is never fighting alone. Teach her to rely on Your power, not her own. Give her the faith to fight one more round, and the peace to trust that You’re working even when she can’t see it. We trust You, Lord — because You have never failed us yet. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
