You Are Not the Label They Gave You

An Encouraging Anchor for Your Week

Breaking Free from the Labels You Were Never Meant to Carry

Hey Reader,

Have you ever believed something about yourself that, looking back now, simply wasn’t true?

Maybe it was a label.
Maybe it was something someone said years ago.
Maybe it was a quiet belief that followed you into adulthood.

Today I want to talk about something powerful: demolishing self-limiting beliefs.

Growing up, I was known as “the creative one.”

Not the smart one.
Not the responsible one.
Just… the creative one.

Now don’t get me wrong—my creativity is certainly a God-breathed gift. But somewhere along the way, that label quietly became a limitation. Because in our home, there was also “the smart one.”

And that was my lovely straight-A student sister.

While I struggled through math and science, she seemed to glide through school with her eyes closed. And when I say that, I mean I’m pretty sure I never even saw her study—and we shared a bedroom for most of our childhood. So yes, I had a pretty clear view of what she was (or wasn’t) doing most nights.

Looking back, something subtle but powerful was happening in my young mind.

I began to believe the labels.

If someone said I wasn’t good at math, I believed it. If someone hinted that I wasn’t responsible, I believed that too. And before long, I wasn’t just hearing those labels…I was living them out.

By the time I reached my teenage years, it felt easier to lean into those expectations than to fight them. Instead of challenging the narrative, I simply accepted it. And if I’m being honest, sometimes I didn’t just accept it.

I proved it right.

Looking back now, I can see what I couldn’t see then: I wasn’t operating from truth. I was operating from self-limiting beliefs.

Everything began to shift when I became pregnant with my firstborn son. Something inside of me woke up. I remember feeling this internal determination rising up—a quiet but powerful decision that things were going to be different.

I wanted to prove to myself that I could be a smart, responsible mom.

But more than that, I wanted to grow. Not just for my son—but for the woman God created me to be (I like to call it a God-tervention).

So I went back to school. I became determined to understand things that once intimidated me. I even became efficient with Excel (which I still consider the greatest calculator of the 21st century). I learned how to build a budget, steward our finances, and organize my responsibilities.

And after finding a church and a faith-filled community, I prayerfully stepped into a position as a Sales Manager at a resort property.

But when I look back now, I realize something important.

The real change wasn’t my circumstances.

The real change was my thinking.

My thoughts were no longer centered on my insecurities. They were centered on this tiny human God had graciously entrusted to me.

And in that season, I needed something deeper than motivation.

I needed truth. God’s truth began to reshape the way I saw myself.

Truth that reminded me I am fearfully and wonderfully made(Psalm 139:14).
Truth that reminded me I was created on purpose and for a purpose(Ephesians 2:10).
Truth that reminded me God designed me with specific gifts and the ability—through His strength—to fulfill what He has called me to do (Philippians 4:13).

Including raising two beautiful, talented, and incredibly smart children.

But here’s something I’ve come to realize over the years: Many of the limitations we carry today didn’t start with God.

They started with beliefs we accepted as truth. Limitations often begin with labels spoken over us or experiences that shaped us. Moments where we quietly decided:“This must just be who I am.”

But Scripture tells us something powerful about our thoughts.

“We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.”
— 2 Corinthians 10:5

Our minds are a battlefield. And you need to remember that the war in our minds is not carnal—this is a legitimate spiritual battle, my friend.

A battle the Enemy is determined to drag you down in. But don’t ever forget this: our battle—YOUR battle—has already been won.

You are victorious!

You, me...we are more than conquerors because of what Christ Jesus has done for us on the Cross! (Romans 8:37)

I get excited just thinking about that! Don't you?!

Knowing this truth, we must intentionally renew our minds so we can discern God’s still small voice and avoid falling into that pit of despair the Enemy works so hard to pull us into.

We need to be intentional about speaking the Word over our lives and taking every thought captive that does not agree with it.

If you are struggling with self-limiting beliefs today, I'm praying for you, sweet friend. Allow me to encourage you with this final thought: The lies may be loud—but God’s truth is louder.

Let's Pray:

Almighty God,

Thank You for loving us enough to reveal truth where we have believed lies. You know the labels we’ve carried, the words that shaped us, and the beliefs that quietly took root in our hearts over the years.

Lord, today we surrender those thoughts to You.

Where we have believed we are not enough, remind us that we are fearfully and wonderfully made. Where we have believed we are incapable, remind us that Your strength is made perfect in our weakness. Where we have allowed labels to define us, help us remember that our identity is found in Christ alone.

Father, renew our minds with Your truth. Give us discernment to recognize the lies of the Enemy and the courage to replace them with Your Word. Help us take every thought captive and align it with what You say about us.

And when those old beliefs try to resurface, remind us that the victory has already been won through Jesus.

Thank You for the purpose You’ve placed inside each of us. Thank You that You are still writing our story.

We trust You to lead us forward in freedom, confidence, and truth.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Tip of the Week

Take One Thought Captive

This week, pay attention to the thoughts that pop into your mind—especially the ones that sound like criticism or limitation.

When a negative thought appears (like “I’m not good enough,” or “I’ll never figure this out”), pause and ask yourself one question:

Does this thought agree with what God says about me?

If the answer is no, replace it with Scripture.

For example:

Instead of
“I’m not capable.”

Speak
“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”(Philippians 4:13)

Renewing our minds doesn’t happen accidentally. It happens intentionally, one thought at a time.

Scripture of the Week

Romans 12:2

“Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—His good, pleasing and perfect will.”

When we change the way we think, we begin to see ourselves the way God sees us.
